Mexican Culture

CHOLULA derives from the Nahuatl Cholollan: "water that falls at the place of escape." It is from one of the oldest settlements in Mexico and has been inhabited, uninterruptedly, from the 5th century BC to the present day. It is considered the oldest living city in America. However, its importance in Mesoamerica varied throughout the two thousand year history of the civilizations of Central America.

The pre-Hispanic Cholula was a great metropolis inhabited for thousands of years. Hernán Cortés, knowing the amount of teocalis, imagined that one could pray in a different temple every day of the year. Temples were built on these indigenous sanctuaries and today San Pedro Cholula has 37 churches, a surprising detail for a city of its size In this Magical Town the two great symbols of both cultures coexist a few meters away: the Great Pyramid and the Ex-Franciscan convent of San Gabriel, one of the oldest convents in America.

The huge Plaza de la Concorde is the center of San Pedro. In its very long portals, visitors and Cholultecas can enjoy a coffee or typical dishes of the region with a privileged view: the Great Pyramid.
